Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 02/1/2010: Increase Your Rod Length for More Leverage

In the early days of competitive bass fishing rods in the 5' 6" length were common place. These rods provided good accurate presentation in the tight quarters of older bass boat hulls that were often 15' to 16' long. Many fishermen from that era were also fishing visible shoreline cover so many of the casts that were presented were fairly short and precise.

As boat length became longer and as fishermen ventured offshore to non visible cover found with the aid of a depthfinder, the longer rods became a necessity. Carolina rigs and deep diving crankbaits made the 5' 6" rods a poor choice for both leverage and casting distance. The bass fishermen evolved and elected to fish the 6' 6" rods or even use a flipping stick while deep cranking.

Today's fishermen have gone even further opting for rods 7' and longer with limber tips to enhance sensitivity as well as allow bass that strike a crankbait to "suck in" the lure. The longer rod is also quite effective in pitching soft plastics to visible cover. The increased leverage is a must to horse a big one up and out of cover,

So next time you want to upgrade your rod arsenal, look at some 7' or greater rods to replace those 6' 6" ones and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
