Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 02/7/2010: Bass Magnets for the Spring SpawnDuring the spawning cycle of the bass they often migrate to shallow water due to the radiant heat of the sun. The ability of the sunrays to penetrate these depths more readily provides an environment favorable to a healthy hatch. However one key factor in a successful spawn is that the adult bass spawn near structure or cover. The structure will provide protection for the hatchlings from nearby predators. So when seeking bass during the spawning months look for structure/cover in shallow water. What types of structure or cover is most prone to hold spawning largemouth bass? Just about any cover can hold spawning fish but my favorites are: 1- Bulrush: These provide the ideal cover for bass during the spawn. They provide cover both horizontally and vertically while allowing ample sunlight to penetrate to warm the eggs. Casting, pitching and flipping are all effective means of fishing this type of cover. Lighter weights in the 1/8 to 1/4 ounce can be used effectively with soft plastics. Tube baits can also excel using light spinning tackle. 2- Lily Pads: Pads found in shallow water can also be great but the key factor when fishing good pads is looking at the type of bottom the pads are growing on. Sandy or moderately sandy is much preferred over silt laden bottoms. Also I prefer to fish isolated stands of pads over a large pad field. My experience has shown me that these pads tend to have more habitable bottoms i.e. sandy bottoms. Good pads are located in shallow water with close proximity to deeper waters. Pads in canals often fit this bill. 3- Grass lines: Kissimmee, maidencane and even hydrilla can be awesome for holding spawning fish. This type of vegetation often grows over sandy bottoms and provide a good sanctuary for hatchlings. Fish the pockets, thick strands and edges with soft plastics using worms, crawfish imitators and tubes. Spinnerbaits, flukes and spoons can also be the ticket especially over the pockets in the grass lines. So the next time the spring spawn is on, give these bass magnets a try and I'm sure you'll be doing more catching with less fishing. Until Next Week, Tight Lines! The Largemouth Herald
