Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 03/27/2010: Post Spawn Bass Fishing

Bass fishing after the spawn can often be difficult as the fish move from shallow water to their deeper haunts. These fish have gone through their annual mating ritual and their normal feeding habits are often subdued.

The key to catching post spawn fish is to try to invoke instinctive strikes versus feeding bites. This often means fishing with faster baits such as rattle traps, shadraps, spinnerbaits and jerkbaits then getting these baits right in front of their noses.

Fishing underwater weedlines, clumps and visible cover such as grass lines are often migration routes and working these baits at a faster than normal pace can invoke that reactive strike even if the bass is not feeding.

Try ripping rattle traps through underwater weeds such as hydrilla and coontail. Work the jerkbaits whether hard style ones or fluke types near grasslines and pad fields. Cast spinnerbaits along reedlines and work it nearer the surface. Finally run the shadraps along humps and submerged cover and try to bump every bit of structure you can find.

So the next time your out fishing just after the major spawn, work those reactive baits and you may be surprised at the outcome.

Until Next Week, Tight Lines!
