Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 05/18/2010:  Bass Boat Tow Vehicle Considerations

Tow vehicle selection has got to be one of the toughest tasks for bass fishermen. A bass boat can't be pulled behind a gas miser like a Toyota Corolla or Prius however good research can lead to the best purchase for your personal situation.

With today's gas prices nearing $3 a gallon, it becomes a big burden filling up the tow vehicle and boat. Since the tow vehicle is used to tow the boat on occasion it may not be the smartest thing to do by buying the biggest V8 out there with 4x4 capability. If you fit this category of fisherman like I do you may consider purchasing a smaller V8 or even a V6 truck or SUV with either limited slip or locking rear differential. This option will allow you to pull your boat up and out of those steep slippery ramps without sacrificing gas mileage.

The key to engine size is to look at not only the horsepower but also the torque produced. Both of these numbers should exceed 220 (hp or ft pounds) at a minimum.

Also check on the weight of the tow vehicle as well as the type of brakes. I believe 4 wheel disc and a vehicle weight near 4000 pounds will suffice in stopping most boats without the need for trailer brakes (be sure to check your state law on what's required).

You will also need to make sure what the tow capacity is for the vehicle. I would guess 5000# should be a minimum for most rigs unless it's a jon boat or small fiberglass rig in which case you can downsize this requirement as well.

So by downsizing your tow vehicle, you may enjoy mileage in the low 20's when not towing rather than the low teens.

Here's a picture of what I chose in May 2010 replacing my 4 door Dodge Dakota.

So when it's time to get a new truck/suv, consider downsizing and you maybe able to afford to fill up your boat's gas tank.

  Until Next Week, Tight Lines!
