Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 07/01/09: Submerged Vegetation Spells Bass Heaven

Bass relate to all types of structure including humps, drop offs, timber, shell beds, rock but one of the most productive is submerged vegetation. Vegetation attracts fish due to a few factors such as the ability to harbor baitfish and insects as well as producing oxygen. Vegetation also provides a nice ambush site for the ever hungry largemouth.

Some common vegetation includes hydrilla, coontail and peppergrass. Fishing hydrilla and coontail is very similar. If the vegetation is completely submerged try fishing over the vegetation with a white Zoom Fluke or gold Rapala Husky jerk. Work these baits erratically with some pauses between jerks. On the deep side of the vegetation where it starts to thin out try throwing a Zoom Trickworm in the Junebug color tied on Texas rig style. Use a 3/16 to 1/4 ounce weight and work it slowly trying to bump into the scattered hydrilla or coontail stalks.

If the hydrilla/coontail is matted on top of the surface, get your flippin stick out and toss a 3/8 to 1/2 ounce weight with a craw imitation or Zoom trickworm into the thickest mats you can find. Jig it several times once you break through the mat to entice a vicious strike. Also throw a white/chartreuse spinner bait with a Colorado willow leaf combination around the scattered mats allowing the bait to fall on occasion when working it into the pockets. A topwater can also be very productive along the mat edges such as a Zara spook or Bot Howdy in chrome/silver.

Peppergrass takes a little more patience but my two most successful methods is pitching the stalks with a Zoom trickworm or working a spinnerbait through the stalks.

Give these methods a shot next time you find submerged vegetation and come back to Florida Bass Fishing.us for some more great fishing tips.
