Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 09/19/09: Light Lines for Clear Waters

Clear water situations in bass fishing often dictate big changes in fishing strategies. Clear water allows the bass to see further and detect subtleties that can cause them to reject even the best fishermen’s offerings. Probably the most important thing a bass angler can do is to present thinner, clearer fishing lines.

Fluorocarbon lines in the 8 to 10 pound test are likely the ideal size and type in most clear lakes. This combination allows the angler to fish the situation with great stealth and also is strong enough to handle a smatter of  underwater vegetation without breaking off.

In heavier cover like grass and timber, you may opt for 12 pound fluorocarbon line to be able to handle the abrasion and loads. In extremely sparse cover situations i.e. little to no underwater vegetation, rocks or timber go as light as 6 pound test.

When using lighter lines especially with soft plastic baits it is essential to use lighter wire gage in your hooks. The thinner wire allows easier penetration of the hook without a violent hookset which is a no-no with light lines due to the lower shock resistance of the thinner diameter lines.

So the next time you go out and fish clear water lakes, try light fluorocarbon line and I’m sure you’ll be getting more strikes.
