Schooling Bass Tips

Schooling bass in Florida are a funny breed. When I discuss schoolers, I'm talking about bass that are breaking the surface in groups of 3 or more to feed on baitfish. Have you ever seen them just frothing the surface about 200 yards away, then when you get there they stop? No problem, you just need to give them some time to settle down as they are often spooked by approaching boats.

If the fish are not breaking the surface, I like to probe the area with Rattletraps and Shadraps. Normally you will get some this way. Vary your retrieve from a fast burning retrieve to a slow steady retrieve. Let the fish tell you what they want. If this doesn't work, try slow rolling a spinnerbait or even cast a Texas rigged worm. If the water is deep, try the Carolina rig.

Obviously, the most exciting time to fish the schoolers is when they are breaking. Most of the time they will hit anything from flukes, topwaters, hard jerkbaits, Rattletraps, Shadraps, worms, spinnerbaits and so on and so forth. Sometimes they are more picky and you have to downsize your lure size. This is due to the size of forage they are feeding on.

Again, vary your retrieve and let the fish tell you what style they want!
