Submerged Timber Tips

Fishing submerged timber for bass in Florida lakes can often lead to a great day catching. Submerged timber can be found in many of the reservoirs, river systems and flooded gravel/rock pits. The timber can also be in the form of a fish attractor often used by the state of Florida.

My favorite ways to fish this type of cover include the deep diving crankbait such as a #9 shadrap or DT series and Carolina rig. See other areas on this site to get more information on these two techniques.

For thick cover, try to find the edge of the timber line and cast 20-30 feet beyond it with either the crankbait or CR (Carolina rig). Work the crankbait rapidly the 1st few turns to get it near the bottom so you can bump the timber. For the CR, retrieve the worm slowly dragging it with a side word pull.

The hits received with these are often a tightening of the line. When this happens, set the hook.

The key is to get the lures as close to the timber as possible. It's a good idea to buy a lure retriever so you can recover those expensive crankbaits.
