Topwaters

Topwaters have to be one of the most exciting ways to catch Florida bass. The visual effect of the bass exploding on a topwater is something to behold.

My favorite topwater of all time is the boy howdy in silver with black back. This lure has a front and rear propeller and is especially deadly around hydrilla. Sometimes the fish like it with a small twitch, then pause for a few seconds when it's calm. If there is some wind, the twitch-twitch-pause method works well.

On real calm days where the surface is like glass, a long rapala works well. Small twitches are usually the best. A  bass usually just sucks this lure in rather than the typical explosion. So watch the lure real well while working it back.

A slight breeze and topped out hydrilla is a good combination for a buzz bait. I like a white skirt, a trailer hook and trailer. This really bulks up the bait for the bass to see. When the bass takes this bait, always wait a few seconds before setting it.
